About Dr. James:
Paul James, MD, was raised in rural North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his baccalaureate and medical degrees. Dr. James is the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington and a well-regarded expert in rural medicine, ambulatory medical education, measurement of health care quality for patients with cardiovascular diseases, and team-based care through pharmacist-physician collaboration.

Nationally, he has served as Co-chair of the Eighth Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure; Chair of the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM) Research Development Committee, President and Chairman of the Board for ADFM. 

Dr. James believes deeply in the missions of education, research, and clinical service. He continues to practice family medicine, caring for a panel of primary care patients and teaches Family Medicine residents, medical, and PA students as part of his work with the UW Family Medicine Residency Clinic. He remains committed to research at the interface of clinical practice, measurement, and education.
