Opioid Addiction and Recovery: OUDs, MAT and the Impact of Stigma

Opioid overdose deaths continue to reach epidemic proportions. In North Carolina, unintentional drug overdose deaths have become a leading cause of death. The coronavirus pandemic has added to the challenges facing many vulnerable groups, including those misusing opioids and other substances. The workshop leader will give an historical retrospective of opioid addiction and recovery, describe the impact of stigma on the change process, and offer updates about promising treatments.

This workshop will educate students, clinicians, community and academic partners about treatment disparities and the impact of stigma among vulnerable populations seeking treatment for addiction. In addition, the presenter will describe effective practices designed to mitigate the effects of misuse of opioids and other substances.
