Coming in 2023: A new, one-year journalism master's curriculum

Our new curriculum launching in 2023 will allow early-career journalists to—in just 12 months—complete an intensive dive into learning the specialized skills of their craft. Each journalism student will pursue one of three specializations:

  • Interactive design journalism focuses on the development of interactive stories and content production for dynamic web projects.
  • Public life reporting focuses on the development of investigative reporting expertise, allowing students to produce stories about education, health care, housing, immigration, labor, law enforcement and racial/ethnic discrimination, among other issues.
  • Video journalism teaches students how to acquire audio, photo and video content; structure stories; and produce short and long-form documentary films.

Master's applications opened this week, and the application deadline for 2023 is Dec. 13, 2022. Get details on our master's admissions page.

In addition to the journalism program in Chapel Hill, we offer a part-time, online master's program designed for working journalists and other communications pros.

Congratulations to Jaqueline Charles '94 of the Miami Herald, the 2022 NABJ Journalist of the Year and the first person to twice earn that distinction. Charles, also a 2022 N.C. Media and Journalism Hall of Fame inductee, first won NABJ Journalist of the Year in 2011. She is pictured addressing graduates at our school's 2019 Commencement.

NABJ HALL OF FAME

Our school is home to the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Journalism, a news trade organization dedicated to increasing and retaining reporters and editors of color in the field of investigative reporting. The organization, which is spearheaded by veteran journalists, also seeks to educate news organizations and journalists on how the inclusion of diverse voices can raise the caliber, impact and visibility of investigative journalism as a means of promoting transparency and good government.
