Faculty Executive Committee statement on provost selection

The Faculty Executive Committee met on Nov. 29 and released the following statement:

Statement of the Faculty Executive Committee Regarding the Selection of the Provost

We write to express our concerns about the search process for the University’s next Provost and to seek clarity from University leadership on the status of the search and the influences that are being brought to bear on it. We call for transparency in the search process and affirm our support for the idea that the Chancellor must be able to select the Provost. We reaffirm the principles in search processes that the Faculty Council supported in Resolution No. 2021-5. On the Hiring of Chancellors, which apply equally to the selection of the University’s chief academic officer. We call on the Board of Trustees and the university administration to address this matter openly with the faculty.

Call for nominations for 2023 Honorary Degrees

The Honorary Degrees and Special Awards Committee invites faculty to submit nominations for Honorary Degrees to be conferred at the 2023 Commencement Ceremony.

Honorary degrees are a way for the University to recognize people who have rendered outstanding service to humanity in the global arena, nation, American South or State of North Carolina. This honor is intended for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to knowledge in the world of scholarship; people whose talent and creativity in the world of the arts has enriched our lives; and people whose devotion to and support of our University merits our highest recognition.

Having a broad and diverse pool of extraordinary candidates, including people from underrepresented groups and a wide variety of disciplines, from which to make its selections is of great importance to the committee. Nominators should make a case for why they believe a nominee should be considered for such recognition. The inclusion of supplementary materials, such as CVs/resumes, is encouraged.

Nominations will be accepted from Jan. 10 through Feb. 14, 2022.

New Faculty Retirement Planning Guide available

The new Faculty Retirement Planning Guide is now available on the Retirement Planning page of the Office of Human Resources website. The guide features key advice from more than 30 recently retired Carolina faculty who wanted to facilitate a smoother process for still-active faculty by gleaning from the experiences they faced in retirement planning. This resource addresses details for faculty in all stages of their careers and is intended to help you plan your individualized path to retirement by covering a variety of topics, such as catch-up contributions, long-term healthcare, eligibility requirements, supplemental benefits, phased retirement, emeritus designation and maintaining UNC connections.

No matter what stage of your career you are in, you are encouraged to consult the guide as an aid in your retirement planning process. Read more...

Faculty Support Hub as an ongoing resource

As you wrap up the Fall semester and consider planning for Spring 2022, please remember that the Faculty Support Hub can be a helpful resource. It centralizes resources and links for faculty well-being, racism and equity, career development, teaching and learning, and information related to COVID-19.

Take a look at https://facultyhub.unc.edu/

Suggestions for The Hub? Send them to facgov@unc.edu.

R3 returns! “Transformational Research, Dismantling Systems of Oppressions in Justice, Education and Health”, the fifth R3 event in the symposium series, will highlight scholarship from UNC graduate students, research scientists and faculty. Their work examines racial equity interventions used to dismantle systems of oppression and can help us understand what actions can disrupt racism and create more just systems. Join on Thursday, Dec. 9, from 1-2:30 p.m. Register at go.unc.edu/R3.

Highlights from November meeting of the Faculty Council and General Faculty

The November 2021 Faculty Council meeting was a joint meeting with the general faculty. The meeting was recorded and can be viewed at this link.

Two of the biggest issues discussed at the meeting were libraries and open access with University Librarian Elaine Westbrooks and University of California San Francisco Professor Richard Schneider who participated in the UC Systems open access negotiations. UC faculty worked with publishers to transform their journals into open access journals, and allow their university system to use their subscription budget to cover the cost of publishing upfront so that everyone around the world has access to the content.

Chair of the Faculty Mimi Chapman hosted a session on community well-being and crisis response with representatives from Carolina Housing, CAPS and Student Affairs. Faculty then had the opportunity to share their experiences with mental health with each other and the administration. Psychiatry Professor Samantha Meltzer-Brody gave a brief preview of the campus' Mental Health Summit of Nov. 15, 2021.
