2021 University Day celebration

University Day is an occasion to remember the University’s past and celebrate its future. The date, Oct. 12, marks the laying of the cornerstone of Old East, the institution’s first building and the oldest state university building in the nation. The Carolina community first celebrated University Day in 1877, after Governor Zebulon B. Vance, as chair of the Board of Trustees, ordered that the day “be observed with appropriate ceremonies under the direction of the faculty.”

The 2021 Edward Kidder Graham Faculty Service Award and Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus Awards recipients will be announced during the University Day Celebration held on Tuesday, October 12 at 2 p.m.

New Faculty Marshal Jay Aikat (Computer Science) will lead the faculty procession!

More information will be available soon. Please visit www.unc.edu/universityday for updates.

A Note from the Chair of the Faculty: Faculty invited to attend commencement for 2020 graduates

Dear Faculty Colleagues:

As you are aware, we will be celebrating the Class of 2020 on the weekend of October 8-10 and I’m writing to invite you to join me at their commencement ceremony on Sunday, October 10.

Our students’s accomplishments are remarkable, and their friends and families value our roles as teachers, mentors and scholars. Commencement honors our collective commitment to learning and building a sense of community within our University, and I’m excited that we are finally able to do this for the Class of 2020, whose time on our campus was cut short by the pandemic....

Highlights from Faculty Council in September

The Faculty Council held its first meeting of the academic year on September 1. The recording of the meeting can be viewed here.

Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz presented History Professor Lloyd Kramer with the Thomas Jefferson Award, which is the highest honor the University bestows on a faculty member. Upon receiving the award, Professor Kramer provided some perspective on the history of the award's namesake and how this history connects to the present. His remarks are available at this link.

During his updates, Chancellor Guskiewicz announced that Professor Jay Aikat (Computer Science and RENCI) has been appointed as Carolina's new Faculty Marshal. She succeeds Communication Professor Patricia Parker who held the marshal's staff for several years, through many University Day celebrations and commencement ceremonies.! May thanks to Professor Parker for her service and to Professor Aikat for accepting this new role! We look forward to seeing you lead faculty processions!
