Nominations for UNC Honorary Degrees sought

The Honorary Degrees and Special Awards Committee invites faculty to submit nominations for Honorary Degrees to be conferred in recognition of extraordinary individuals: those who have made outstanding contributions to knowledge in the world of scholarship; or whose talent and creativity in the world of the arts has enriched our lives; or whose devotion to and support of our University merits our highest honor. Please consider a worthy candidate and submit a nomination by midnight on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022.

Having a broad and diverse pool of extraordinary candidates, including people from underrepresented groups and a wide variety of disciplines, from which to make its selections is of great importance to the committee.

February is Black History Month

A wide variety of events are taking place on campus (or remotely!) in honor of Black History Month. This week, Dr. Marcia Chatelain (Georgetown University) will deliver the 2022 African American History Month Lecture on Wednesday, February 9 at 6:30 p.m.

The Office for Diversity and Inclusion has compiled a list of events available here.

Highlights from January Faculty Council meeting

The Faculty Council met remotely on January 14, 2022. Provost Blouin offered his departing remarks in his final meeting as provost. His successor, Prof. Chris Clemens, was introduced at the meeting alongside incoming Executive Vice Provost Amy Hertel.

Infectious disease expert Prof. David Weber (Medicine and Public Health) gave an informative presentation on COVID-19 that focused on the Omicron variant. Dean of Students Desirée Rieckenberg and Provost Blouin joined him to answer questions.

Retired Faculty Association members Professors Donna Falvo (Rehabilitation Counseling and Psychology) and Thomas Clegg (Physics and Astronomy) gave a brief presentation on the UNC Faculty Retirement Planning Guide that retired faculty created after considering their own experiences with the process and how it could be improved.

Before adjourning, the Faculty Council went into closed session to consider nominees for awards for fall 2023.
