Steponaitis in final year as Secretary of the Faculty

Anthropology and Archaeology Professor Vin Steponaitis began his five-year term as Secretary of the Faculty in 2016. Little did he know that he would have the distinction of being the first faculty secretary to work with four different chairs of the faculty in fewer than five years.

This year, at the beginning of fall semester, Professor Steponaitis decided that he would not seek re-election in order to focus on his scholarly research and student mentoring. Despite being an avowed "faculty governance geek," his first love is archaeology, and he looks forward to being able to devote more time to it.

"It's been an honor and privilege to serve in this role," said Professor Steponaitis, "and I'm proud that faculty governance at Carolina remains strong." During his time leading the Office of Faculty Governance, staff say he has introduced innovations that have enabled both the office and faculty governance in general to run more efficiently and transparently.

The responsibility for finding the next secretary of the faculty lies with the Advisory Committee, which is currently working on the process in anticipation of announcing the call for nominees soon.

Engage with Winter Break Students

As the University welcomes Winter Break, Carolina Housing is creating engagement opportunities for the more than 300 students who will continue to live on campus during this much longer than usual break. They have created a newsletter and GroupMe specific to the students who will remain at an especially quiet Carolina.

Carolina Housing invites individual faculty as well as departments and other units to send announcements to be shared with students through Jan 13. For example, Carolina Dining Services will have daily messages about special discounts at local eateries, and Carolina Housing will send out weekly live Zoom engagement events such as holiday trivia night in addition to notifications about COVID-19 testing and campus health resources. Your announcement need not be a live event; it could be a reminder about self-care, mental health, exercise tips or a must-see movie list, or as simple as a "Wishing you well from [your department]" message.

Carolina Housing's main goal is to keep in constant contact with our Winter Break students in non-traditional ways to help keep a fun, healthy line of connection in the hopes of helping to stave off that feeling of isolation and loneliness. Of course, with your help, we can achieve that and be of great service to our Tar Heels.

Send your announcements to Carolina Housing via email.
