Message from Chair of the Faculty Mimi Chapman

Mimi Chapman

Dear Colleagues,

Friday will be the last Faculty Council meeting of the year and my last time with all of you in this role. We are fortunate to have had two thoughtful and brilliant choices to be our faculty chair and I want to offer my thanks to both Beth Moracco and Tom Kelley for running, and to congratulate Beth on her win. I have no doubt this faculty will be in good hands.

These three years have been both tumultuous and inspiring. Representing this faculty has been my great honor and I thank you for your confidence and support as we have weathered the pandemic and other threats to the well-being of our campus. Our difficulties have not resolved, and I hope you will extend Beth the support and grace you have given to me.

I look forward to seeing you in person or on zoom on Friday and I wish each of you the very best as we close the semester and move into summer.

Warm regards,

Mimi

Mimi V. Chapman

Chair of the Faculty

Frank A. Daniels Distinguished Professor of Social Work

Update on Faculty Town Hall

On April 10, Chair of the Faculty Mimi Chapman hosted a Faculty Town Hall. Faculty and other members of the University community discussed the new “compelled speech” policy adopted by the Board of Governors in February; the legislative request for DEIA information from administrators across the UNC System; and the proposed School of Civic Life and Leadership.

The recording of the Faculty Town Hall can be found here.

Faculty Council passes resolution on principles for work-related data

During the March 2023 Faculty Council meeting, Professor Dan Anderson (English and Comparative Literature), chair of the Faculty Information Technology Advisory Committee (FITAC), introduced Resolution 2023-3, On Endorsing Principles for Work-Related Data. The resolution stems from faculty concerns about Office 365's ability to track productivity and how it relates to work-related data in general. The committee spent more than two years studying the issues and meeting with various stakeholders, including the Office of University Counsel, University Archives, the Employee Forum, and the Provost's Office. FITAC found that many current policies related to this type of data are outdated and require both codification and updating. The committee feels that these issues need to be followed on an ongoing basis.

The resolution calls for the University to adhere to principles of transparency, prohibiting surveillance, privacy and data ownership, and promoting education about policies in a clear and readily accessible manner. The principles are intended to represent faculty values and act as a guide while the campus works to clarify and codify policies and procedures for managing and using faculty work-related data. The Council Faculty passed the resolution unanimously.

Campus equipped with 107 lifesaving defibrillators

According to the American Heart Association, cardiac arrest claimed the lives of 436,852 Americans in 2020. Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival. Use of an Automated External Defibrillators (AED) can increase the chance even further.

There are 107 AEDs strategically located around Carolina’s campus. Their locations can be found on this map.

AEDs work by delivering an electric shock through the chest to the heart to restart or regulate a person’s heartbeat. Fully automated kits are equipped with voice prompts walking a user through the process, which is so straightforward that many children can complete the seven critical steps. According to the American Heart Association, there is no minimum age to operate the device.
