Resilience-Based Counseling with Marginalized Youth

A Virtual Seminar sponsored by UNC-PrimeCare4Youth and the UNC School of Social Work

This interactive workshop introduces a strength and resilience-based approach to counseling and psychotherapy with children and adolescents who experience marginalization. Rarely are counselors and therapists taught how to identify, appreciate, and utilize client/student strengths to deal with existing problems. Participants will leave with research-based, practical, and effective strategies for assessing and using client/student strengths and resources in school-based and community-based counseling.

**This workshop is free to all participants. Funding is provided by the UNC School of Social Work and the UNC-PrimeCare4Youth program (funded by HRSA). For planning purposes, please register ahead of time.

Description:

This workshop will educate students, field instructors, site supervisors, preceptors and community partners about current trends impacting behavioral health professionals. Speakers will review key concepts and terms, will offer critiques of the self-care model, and offer suggestions for building resilience while decreasing the risk for burnout and compassion fatigue.

Speaker Bio:

Joseph Williams is an Associate Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Virginia. He is a faculty affiliate with Youth-Nex: The UVa Center to Promote Effective Youth Development and the Center for Race and Public Education in the South. His professional research interest includes designing and implementing anti-bias and anti-racist training practices for (K-12) counselors, educators, and other helping professionals. In addition to publishing scholarly articles and book chapters in these areas, he consults with school districts, communities, associations, organizations, and corporations to improve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts and engage people in productive dialogue and action. In 2019, he started Affirm Consulting, LLC to provide broad diversity, equity, and inclusion training and workshops for K-12 schools, community organizations, businesses, associations, and colleges and universities across the nation. Dr. Williams has conducted over 200 workshops and seminars on DEI-related topics. His presentations are interactive, challenging, informative, and practical. Dr. Williams received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in Education and his M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Minnesota State University. He has over ten years of practical experience counseling children, adolescents, and families in school and mental health settings.

Target Audience:

  • Behavioral health students including social workers, school counselors, mental health and clinical rehabilitation counselors, nurse practitioners, addiction counselors, psychology students.
  • Behavioral health professionals including social workers, school counselors, professional counselors, nursing and allied health professionals, marriage and family therapists, pastoral counselors, clergy, school administrators, peer support specialists.  
  • Community and other social service professionals

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Define resilience.
  • Discuss the benefits of a resilience-based approach to working with children and adolescents who experience marginalization.
  • Understand the administration and uses of strength-based assessment and intervention strategies.
  • Describe possible applications of resiliency-based counseling in addressing client/student treatment needs.
