2023 Manager Awards

Nominations open through Friday, April 14

Nominate outstanding University managers for their accomplishments and leadership. Open to any permanent full-time staff manager (EHRA Non-Faculty or SHRA). Award winners will be announced at the University Managers Association (UMA) Annual Meeting on May 25, 2023.

Manager of the Year (MOTY) Award

The MOTY Award honors a manager’s University accomplishments, both within and beyond normal job responsibilities. To be eligible, a manager must have two or more years of University service. UMA membership not required; prior winners and current UMA board members not eligible for nomination.

Outstanding Encouragement of Learning & Development (OELD) Award

The OELD Award recognizes a manager’s outstanding support and encouragement of employee learning and development. To be eligible, a manager must have at least one year of University service; prior winners are eligible to be nominated again.

Performance management

Drop-in office hours this month

Every Tuesday and Wednesday during the month of April, we will hold drop-in performance management office hours online via Zoom, where you can ask questions and get one-on-one support:

  • Tuesdays 10 – 11 a.m.

  • Wednesdays 3 – 4 p.m.

EHRA Conversion

for Auditing, Business, and Finance (ABF) Professionals

Employees in Auditing, Business, and Finance (ABF) positions that are eligible to convert to EHRA Non-Faculty need to complete the online election form in ConnectCarolina Self Service by April 16 to indicate their voluntary decision to convert to EHRA or to remain SHRA, if they have not already done so.

Holiday & Leave Reminders

Leave options for employees

The University will be closed Friday, April 7, for Spring Holiday. As a reminder, employees can request to exchange the paid Spring Holiday or any other University holiday for another religious holiday within the employee’s religious faith. See the Alternate Holiday section of the Holiday & Holiday Pay Policy for details.

Total WellBeing Expo

Event recap & new on-demand wellness resources

Thanks to all who participated in this year’s Total WellBeing Expo, which saw nearly 700 UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and staff enjoy the wellness resource fair, wellness checks, fitness classes, chair massages, cooking demo, friendly competition in the play zone and entertainment by the Bouncing Bulldogs jump rope team. Throughout the week, 18 virtual sessions guided employees in movement, meditation and financial education; these sessions are now available in the Total WellBeing On-Demand library.

Give statewide recognition to our employees for outstanding accomplishments made outside of regular job responsibilities by nominating them for the annual Governor’s Awards for Excellence. The highest honor the state presents to its employees, these awards are presented in seven categories, including efficiency & innovations, human relations and public service. Help Portal refresh

New look, better experience

On March 23, ITS rolled out a refreshed Help Portal. The Help Portal, also known as help.unc.edu, is the primary way Tar Heels get tech help. Next time you visit, expect a new look and a prompt to log in with your Onyen. Logging in first will give you a smoother experience whether you’re chatting with the ITS Service Desk or searching for help articles. Guest access still available.

TIAA & Fidelity Investments

More than just retirement savings resources, TIAA and Fidelity Investments can also help improve your overall financial health with quick financial checkups. Get advice about your financial situation from TIAA or Fidelity by scheduling a complementary onsite or virtual appointment. You do not need to participate in TIAA or Fidelity retirement plans for an advice session. Simply select Guest Access when scheduling your appointment.

Financial Wellness Series

by State Employees' Credit Union (SECU)

Join virtually or in person in the AOB Conference Room 1501AB at an upcoming Friday session. All are welcome! You do not need to be a SECU member to participate. Sessions begin at noon and run approximately 45 minutes.

Prevent Diabetes

Online program begins Sunday, April 16

Prevent type 2 diabetes before it begins with Eat Smart, Move More, Prevent Diabetes! This CDC-recognized 12-month diabetes prevention program is based on proven strategies to achieve and maintain a healthy weight to prevent diabetes. Take an online prediabetes test to know your risk.

Free for eligible North Carolina residents — a $430 value! (North Carolinians only pay $30 and receive ALL $30 back for meeting attendance and tracking requirements.) Read success stories from previous ESMMPD participants. Register by Friday, April 14.

Giving Effective Feedback in Personal or Work Situations

Tuesday, April 11 | 1 – 2 p.m.

Giving effective feedback is difficult, and most people avoid opportunities to give constructive feedback and instead give infrequent and often unhelpful positive feedback. This workshop helps you identify when to give positive versus critical feedback and when to praise effort versus skill. With examples, practice situations and judgment-free language that reduces defensiveness, you can learn to deliver effective feedback at work or at home.

Digital Accessibility Documents Part 1 –
Word and PowerPoint

Wednesday, April 12 | 10 a.m. – noon

Learn best practices for ensuring your documents and presentations are fully accessible. Use Microsoft Word tools to structure documents in an accessible way, get tips on making accessible PowerPoint presentations and find out how to check for accessibility issues.

Practicing Assertiveness

Thursday, April 13 | 1 – 2 p.m.

Some people are naturally assertive, but for others, assertiveness requires practice. Learn what it means to be assertive and how to differentiate between passive, aggressive, passive aggressive and assertive forms of communication. Discover strategies to clearly define what you need from others and advocate for yourself in a way that respects the rights of others — and your own.

Knowing how to work with your supervisor can be one of the most challenging but most important components of a successful career. Get tips on how to “manage up” to build a successful, transparent and mutually beneficial relationship with your boss.

Enhance your ability to use your strengths to your advantage — and understand how quickly they can become your weaknesses. Through this session you will identify the strengths, weaknesses and effectiveness of each leadership and team style and will develop your own definition of leadership.

35th annual Carolina Blood Drive

Wednesday, May 3 | 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Show you bleed Carolina blue and support the Carolina Blood Drive:

  • Be a donor. Free parking available at the Smith Center or ride the bus with Chapel Hill Transit to the Smith Center. All donors will receive a T-shirt and free food.

  • Schedule an appointment. Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), visit RedCrossBlood.org or use the Blood Donor App and enter sponsor code UNC. Walk-ins will be accepted the day of the drive, but appointments are encouraged.

  • Volunteer. Sign up to help with the Carolina Blood Drive!

REX Mobile Mammography

On campus Friday, May 5

Early detection is your best protection! Receive your annual 3-D breast cancer screening Friday, May 5, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., on campus outside Woollen Gym, 300 South Road. The screening is expected to take 20 minutes. Reserved parking will be provided.

Schedule your appointment by 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 14:

  • Select UNC-CH Spring Fling as your employer.

  • Call 919-784-4210 with scheduling questions.

  • Must be 35 years of age or older.

  • Must have an active physician (seen in the last year).

  • A referral is not required for this screening, but the name of your established physician (PCP or OB/GYN) must be provided in the Referring Provider field of the scheduling form.

  • Results are confidential and only shared with you and the physician you enter into the Referring Provider field.

Spring Fling Walk/Run

Friday, May 5 | noon

Celebrate the semester's end with Campus Recreation at this year’s annual Spring Fling! Meet in person in front of the Student Recreation Center (SRC) for this 1.5-mile fun walk or 2.7 mile run. A social with free refreshments to follow. Registration open through Thursday, May 4. As always, costumes encouraged but not required!
